Beginning in 1935 the Texas Rangers were finally designated an official badge made from the 1947 or 1948 Mexican cinco peso. The coin features the last Aztec Emperor Cuauhtemoc on one side and the Mexico's national coat of arms on the other. The badge is slightly domed with a star in the middle of a circular band and a very detailed design.

The Cinco Peso badge is the badge most closely associated with the Texas Rangers. However, it has a rather unique history that is more closely associated with border lawmen in general. Back in the 1800's and early 1900's, there weren't many, if any, companies making badges for lawmen.

In 1962, Colonel Homer Garrison, Jr. approved the design of the current badge, crafted from Mexican five peso silver coins for Rangers and Lieutenants and fifty peso gold coins for higher ranks. Inspired by early Ranger badges, the current badge is decorated with wreaths of olive and live oaks from the Great Seal of Texas.
